A specialised industrial scientific testing instrument known as Mackey’s Cloth Oil Tester, manufactured by Reynolds & Branson Ltd. of Leeds. The apparatus features a cylindrical polished copper body with a soldered triangular spout and a wooden-handled bail grip secured by steel brackets. The removable copper lid assembly is fitted with a central knurled brass adjustment screw, a ventilation aperture, and two vertical tubes of different metals. This device was engineered for the textile industry to determine the spontaneous combustion potential of oils by monitoring the temperature of oiled wool in a controlled air current. A brass and black enamel manufacturer’s nameplate is riveted to the lid, providing the maker’s name and the serial number 573.
