Lot 232 A Japanese carved hardwood Camel

A Japanese carved hardwood okimono depicting a camel in a recumbent position on an integral oval base. The animal is portrayed laden with traditional travel equipment, including two tied sacks and a large, wide-brimmed suge-gasa hat positioned on its back. The figure is carved from a dense, dark-toned wood with a polished deep brown finish. Fine incised lines define the harness details and the texture of the headgear. No maker marks or signatures are visible. The carving technique and subject matter suggest a late Meiji or Taisho period origin.
