Lot 47 J. & E. Stevens Always Did 'Spise A Mule Mechanical Bank

An original late 19th-century cast iron mechanical bank manufactured by the J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Connecticut, USA. The model, titled Always Did ‘Spise A Mule, was designed by James H. Bowen and patented in July 1882. The bank features a bucking mule and a seated male figure mounted on a rectangular base with a scalloped lower edge. The top surface of the base contains the embossed inscription ALWAYS DID ‘SPISE A MULE. The bank is constructed from several cast iron components and was originally decorated with a polychrome painted finish. The mechanical action is operated by a lever located on the top of the base; when depressed, the mule kicks forward, causing the seated figure to pivot backwards. A coin slot is visible on the top of the base.
