Lot 130 Antique British Railway RA 8188 Telegraph Instrument in Mahogany Case

A late 19th or early 20th-century single-needle railway telegraph instrument of the type traditionally used in signal boxes for station-to-station communication. The instrument is housed in a substantial mahogany case designed for wall mounting. The front features a glazed aperture showing a circular dial painted in a characteristic railway green. Centrally mounted is a horizontal dark metal needle, flanked by two V-shaped brass limit pins designed to constrain its movement. On the side of the case is an operating crank mechanism with a brass shank and a turned wooden knob. The rear panel includes a small hinged access door and several pre-drilled holes for mounting purposes. The assembly is held together with various brass screws, including several circular two-pin spanner type screws. No maker’s marks, serial numbers, or engraved text are visible on the exterior of the case or the dial face. This style of instrument was widely utilized across the British railway network, particularly by companies like the Great Western Railway and the Great Northern Railway.
