A Victorian walnut coal scuttle, or purdonium, of typical upright form with a sloping hinged front. The wooden case is fitted with ornate decorative brass hardware, including stylized strap hinges, corner mounts, and a central turned pull knob. A substantial turned brass carrying handle is mounted to the top with circular backplates. The reverse of the scuttle features a fitted brass bracket housing its matching brass-handled coal shovel. The interior contains a removable black-painted metal coal liner with a fixed handle. No maker marks or signatures are present.
